3:26 MOLA (Ocean Sunfish)
Elias (www.youtube.com/user/eliasvaisberg87) and I attempt to find some Striped Bass on Nov 14th 2016 in Asbury Park NJ. I was disappointed to find that the Big Stripers were no where to be found and instead, just a few small Bass were hanging around the bunker schools. At about 9 am I spotted a strange looking fin slowly headed my way and knew immediately it was the unmistakable Tail Fin of an Ocean Sunfish, also known as a Mola Mola. I got to hang out with the fish for a minute or 2 before I spooked him and he disappeared into the depths. It seemed weird that an Ocean Sunfish would be hanging out here in mid November when water temps were 55 degrees, notice during the underwater clip the rash on the top of the fish, he had some sort of disease no doubt and although he appeared healthy, he better get out to warmer water soon or he will not survive.
After that, fishing grinded to a halt and it wasn’t until a little later some Bird play appeared over some Big Bluefish who were assaulting some baitfish, we caught a couple blues each before they vanished, we chased birdplay the rest of the day and each got a couple more small Bass before heading in. I would consider this a slow day of fishing but luckily we were able to find some fish here and there throughout the day. Seeing a Mola up close definitely made it worth it.
Hope you enjoy watching, I really hope the fishing in NJ saltwaters stays alive awhile longer…
